<image:title>My Story - I then went on to complete an MSc at UCL in Medicinal Natural Products and Phytochemistry. Here I learnt about active compounds, how to investigate plants in the lab, pharmacognosy, quality control, regulations, indigenous medicines, cosmeceuticals and much more. It is easy for me to say this was one of the best and most inspiring years of my life and it was a privilege to be led by great teachers including Dr Jose Prieto and Professor Michael Heinrich. Since then I have been a researcher at Kew Gardens, an editor for the academic Journal of Herbal Medicine, science teacher at herbalism schools, writer, editor and educator. I am also the proud founder of Laz The Plant Scientist, where I offer high quality natural medicines I have formulated and is also educational platform for herbal science, and holistic healthcare. My aims are to do delve deeper into ethnopharmacology research, clinical trials and gathering real world evidence. My career has been multifaceted, delving into diverse areas of the natural medicine’s world. I like to think of my career as an ecosystem with many moving, supportive parts that have synergy and contribute to something bigger. I want to facilitate a shift in culture on how people perceive health and wellbeing, as well as progress. My life view is that step towards nature is a step towards balance, and I aim to connect people to their healing through nature. I took the notion “follow your dreams” quite literally, and I am glad I did. It has lead me on a fascinating and fulfilling path and I am always excited and curious to see what is next. truly believe a life researching and connecting with the natural world and healing is a life well spent.</image:title>

<image:title>Research and Academia - I was also an editor for the Journal of Herbal Medicine which is run by Elsevier. Scientists sent over their latest research in plant and fungi medicines and it was my job to review, critique and improve it. Needless to say this job was one of my favourites- what a delight to get to read about the latest global medicinal plant and fungi research every week!</image:title>
<image:caption>Additionally I have published research in collaboration with UCL, Eden Project and Pukka Herbs authored with Professor Michael Heinrich. The research is entitled Herbal medicine: Who cares? The changing views on medicinal plants and their roles in British lifestyle. Here I surveyed over 400 members of the British public to understand their relationship with medicinal plants, and I took a particular interest in why natural health is being embraced more. I also focused on people's relationship with herbal medicines in relation to pharmaceuticals, people's perception of quality control and which medicinal plants they grow themselves. My work was represented at the annual Spices and Medicine conference at UCL, the British Herbal Medicine Association and the Herbal History Research Network.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research and Academia - The American Botanical Council is a globally renowned resource for herbal medicine science, research and sustainability within the industry. It was my pleasure to write a series of HerbClips for them, where I condensed scientific papers into digestible short pieces for people to learn from easily. I was also a contributor to the Society of Economic Botany (SEB) newsletter and was a part of their diversity, equity and inclusion committee. SEB is a society connecting ethnobotanists, researchers and academics "exploring the uses of, and our relationship with plants, cultures and our environment - plants and human affairs". They host many fascinating talks and conferences showcasing the latest plant research from around the world. My research interests include; plant and fungi medicines, pharmacognosy, quality control of plants, cannabis, psychedelics, ethnopharmacology, neuroscience, holistic therapies, ethnobotany, entheogens, healing and wellbeing.</image:title>

<image:title>Botanical Quality Control - So, I have collaborated with my colleague Zachary Bellman who is completing his PhD on the quality control of plants used for health. We have created a resource to educate both the public and individuals in industry on the different problems to do with the quality of botanicals in the wellness industry. The resource is called “How healthy are botanical supplements? A brief exploration of sustainability, supply chains and quality issues in the herbal medicine and food supplements industry” and can be found here.</image:title>
<image:caption>It is my belief that changes will not shift in the industry until people are educated on the topic. Therefore, I was very happy to be asked to speak about this topic and present my research at a conference on the antibiotics crisis. Representatives from the NHS and NICE were present, and the chief medical officer of the UK requested a briefing of the talk. The conference was hosted by Pukka Herbs and the College of Medicine and Integrated Health.</image:caption>

<image:title>Botanical Quality Control - I am also a team member of the Medicinal Plant Naming Services at Kew Gardens. This is a fantastic database as a major problem which effects the quality and regulation of medicinal plants is nomenclature. One plant can have many names (synonyms), and one name can be for many plants (homonyms). This can make sourcing the correct species of plants very difficult and plants used in industry are often mixed up, unbeknownst to suppliers. This database is a catalogue for the plethora of names for a medicinal plant and helps one identify the correct species.</image:title>

<image:title>Cannabis and Psychedelics - The McKenna Academy The McKenna Academy are an academy I greatly admire, as they are truly interdisciplinary and full of integrity. In 2022 they held a historical conference- Ethnopharmacological Search for Psychoactive Drugs 55 (ESPD55). It was a fascinating conference, where I had the tremendous privilege of meeting luminaries, legends and visionaries within the field who have been embarking on this work since the 1960’s. From ethnobotanists, to shamans, anthropologists, lawyers and chemists this conference shared research from thought leaders around the globe. The predominant discussions were on centring indigenous voices, sustainability and reciprocity which are all values I hold dear, and which all movements need.</image:title>
<image:caption>This conference is being turned into a book which I was the scientific and managing editor for. It has been an incredible experience so far, and I am proud to say I am now also on the board for the academy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cannabis and Psychedelics - Cannabis</image:title>
<image:caption>Huntington’s is a debilitating condition with very limited treatment, though we hypothesise that cannabis could offer a solution. My colleagues Dr Shannah Marrinan and Jaydon Innott and I have written a review which is currently pending publication, outlining our theories behind this topic. We presented our poster “Phytocannabinoids for the treatment of Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Disease -Neurodegenerative conditions presenting hyperkinesia” at the Cannabinoid Conference 2022. I have also written for the Cypriot Cannabis Association, Leafie and Herbal Reality. You can also read a “Thought Leaders” interview with Global Cannabis Intelligence here, where I shared my insights on plant medicines in relation to cannabis. I am always keen to do more research, education and activism in this space.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - My Story.</image:title>
<image:caption>Hi, my name’s Rebecca Lazarou. I am a medicinal plant and fungi scientist, writer, speaker and herbal formulator. My career is an ecology of different disciplines spanning across medical science, ethnopharmacology, herbalism, holistic healthcare, cannabis and psychedelics. Ultimately my aim is to help nurture our relationship with nature through natural medicines, and support our species return back to Earth centred living. I am devoted to science to demystify these topics, but equally I am committed to rekindling the magic, awe and healing we find on our precious Earth. Currently I am doing my PhD in medicinal plants at Kew Gardens and UCL School of Pharmacy, I am the founder of Laz The Plant Scientist, the science advisor for Herbal Reality and a board member for the McKenna Academy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Laz The Plant Scientist - My intentions with this was to create a platform where herbal knowledge is made accessible, as are quality medicines. Where people know what they are getting, that it is respectfully sourced, and how it works, all at accessible price points. I want people to be empowered, knowledgeable, discerning and inspired. I want people to know how much they can support their wellbeing and therefore happiness with natural medicines- after all what are we here for if its not to be happy? Knowing what I want to see in the world, it was clear to me that I needed to create my own business, as business’s are vehicles for change. To pour all of my knowledge, heart and creativity into this has been a privilege I cherish, and the response from the public has been deeply moving. For this I feel truly honoured. No doubt businesses selling natural medicines face deep and complex problems, but I will continue to move steadfast towards the world I want to see. You can learn more about Laz The Plant Scientist and my offerings here.</image:title>

<image:title>Herbalism - Herbal Reality I am the co-editor of Herbal Reality a platform founded by Sebastian Pole to educate the public on plant medicines. Herbal Reality is a collective of herbalists, scientists and academics created to be a voice for herbal medicine. Despite the exponential rise of natural product use not much of the information found online about natural medicines is written by herbalists, and this is profoundly misguided. Herbal Reality is part of a wider movement unite herbalists, healthcare practitioners and researchers, and educate people on the power of plant and fungi medicines. It is a charity and movement I am very proud to be a part of.</image:title>

<image:title>Herbalism - Betonica I am the pharmacology teacher for Betonica School of Herbal Medicine, a wonderful NIMH accredited school based in the south of England. I particularly love this school as not only do students get vigorous training over 4 years, with 500 clinical hours, but they also experience being with the medicinal plants as there is a herbal farm there. I believe this experiential aspect is invaluable, as after all herbalism is not simply about pharmacology but also about nurturing our connection to nature. It brings me great joy to meet the future herbalists of the UK and to be able to share with them some of the science behind these medicines.</image:title>

<image:title>Talks and Projects - Projects G7 Youth Ambassador I was a G7 youth ambassador for healthcare, for the G7 summit in 2021. It was my role to conduct a series of public meetings centred around health, which I programmed more specifically around topics such as preventative healthcare, overmedicalisation and mental health. My job was to collate and feedback answers to the relevant people to share with those in policy. It was fascinating to explore and listen to the public, and I was both surprised and happy to hear many of them calling for more spaces to grow food/herbs and more education on non-pharmaceutical medicines. Gatsby Plant Science Summer School The Gatsby Plant Science Education Programme is an initiative by Cambridge University, to increase and improve plant science education across the UK. They have an intensive summer school initiative where they select the UK’s brightest bioscience undergraduates to come and learn. I was asked to give a talk hear to the undergraduates, and was both surprised and blown away by the response and enthusiasm from the students. There was unprecedented interested in medicinal plants and fungi, and some said it shifted their perception on where they want to go with their career. What this shows is that more opportunities in this field are needed both in the research industry and academia, as the interest and passion are there in younger generations. I hope this is something I can help sculpt in the future. You can watch a YouTube interview of me from the school here “Are ethnopharmacology & herbalism scientific? - Rebecca Lazarou” Community Projects One of my favourite things to do is share knowledge with our community, and meeting kindred people who share a curiosity and love for the natural world. It has been my pleasure to work with fantastic community initiatives such as Phytology, Create Conscious Community, and Community Apothecary all initiatives which I deeply respect and admire.</image:title>

<image:title>Talks and Projects - Talks Integrative & Personalised Medicine conference As part of Herbal Reality I gave a talk at the Integrative & Personalised Medicine conference. This conference is exemplary of the fact that many people from different branches of medicine are coming together to both evolve our medical practises, and remember the truths we always knew- that nature provides many answers for a healthy life. Antibiotics Resistance Conference In 2019 a group of medical professionals, herbalists, representatives from the NHS and NICE gathered for a topical discussion on the antibiotics crisis, a major problem in medicine. The conference was hosted by Pukka Herbs and the College of Medicine and Integrated Health. It was Led by Professor Michael Depledge, from the European Centre for Environment and Human Health at Exeter Medical School. Interdisciplinary research was presented and I gave a talk about the importance of quality control within the botanical supplements industry. After all if our quality or sustainability values falter then the potential of herbal medicines is severely limited. National Institute of Medical Herbalists In 2022 I had the pleasure of speaking at the Power of Plants festival for herbalists, hosted by the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. It was a true delight for me to connect with herbalists from all over the UK, and this festival truly showcased how knowledgeable, diverse and talented herbalists are. One day I aim to be a clinical herbalist, and I feel inspired by my herbal peers and their work. Festivals, Retreats, Events and Art As much as I love researching, I also love music and festivals. An unexpected benefit from my career has been the opportunity to speak at various festivals about herbs, science and healing. This has included We Out Here, Lattitude and Medicine festival. I have also had the pleasure of giving workshops at retreats and wellbeing events. Particularly special sessions have been multifaceted experiential events where I have combined herbs, with hypnotherapy and other healing modalities. I have also collaborated on interdisciplinary art projects with Invisible Dust and Frances Disley.</image:title>
